PT Compact License and Privileges 2026: Which States Issue Them, What They Cost, How to Apply

Published April 25, 2026 · Updated October 25, 2026 · By Matt Michuda, PT, DPT — former travel physical therapist

Last verified: against the PT Compact Commission (ptcompact.org) and the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (fsbpt.org). Compact status changes; always confirm a state on the Commission's compact map before you buy.

There is no separate PT compact license: a PT or PTA with an active license in a home state that issues privileges buys a compact privilege for each other member state, and as of October 25, 2026, 38 states (including DC) issue them. Each privilege costs $45–$309, the Commission's $45 fee plus any state fee, and in most cases it is issued within minutes of purchase, per the PT Compact Commission.

A compact privilege is state-specific, it depends on your home-state license, and the PT Compact Commission describes it as the legal equivalent of a state-issued license in the state where you use it.

How to get a PT compact privilege, step by step

  1. Check Eligibility. Confirm your home state issues privileges and your license is clear; the Commission's eligibility checker walks through it.
  2. Review Fees & Jurisprudence Requirements. Each state sets its own fee and exam rule; the table above lists both, and the Commission's fees page is the official version.
  3. Pass Required Jurisprudence Exam(s). Take any exam the state requires before purchase. States may charge their own exam fee on top of the privilege fee.
  4. Apply for Compact Privileges. Buy the privilege for each state through the Commission's purchase portal, signing in with your FSBPT ID.
  5. Receive & Verify Compact Privileges. The privilege number is emailed to you and added to your dashboard, and employers can verify it online.

You buy a separate privilege for each state you want to work in. Privileges are issued only to people who meet all of the Commission's eligibility rules: a current license in a home state that issues privileges, no active encumbrance on any PT or PTA license, and no disciplinary action on any PT or PTA license in the last 2 years.

What the PT Compact doesn't cover

For travel PTs: compact privilege or full license for a 13-week contract?

Speed. The Commission says a privilege is much quicker to get than a license from the state board, and in most cases it is issued within minutes. If the state requires its jurisprudence exam before purchase, build that in.

Cost. A privilege costs $45–$309 per state for a PT. Full-license fees are set by each state board and aren't in our data, so compare against the board's own fee schedule; the board for every state is linked in the table.

Timing against your contract. A privilege expires on the date your home-state license expires, and there is no proration: you pay the full fee however little time is left on your home license. If your home license renews during a 13-week contract, the Commission suggests renewing it first and waiting about a week before buying the privilege.

Where you still need a full license. 13 states: California, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island and Wyoming. A privilege is also not meant for a permanent move: if you are relocating, the Commission recommends a state license instead.

PTAs

The compact covers physical therapist assistants through the same process: eligible PTs and PTAs buy privileges, with the same eligibility rules and jurisprudence requirements. The fees are the same for PTs and PTAs everywhere except Alaska, Nevada and Tennessee, where the PTA fee differs; the table shows both. Details are on the Commission's site.

Frequently asked questions

What does 'PT compact state' mean?

A PT compact state is one that has joined the Physical Therapy Licensure Compact. As of October 25, 2026, 38 states (counting the District of Columbia) are actively issuing and accepting compact privileges, and 3 more have enacted the compact but are not issuing yet, according to the PT Compact Commission.

What is a compact PT license?

There is no separate compact license. What PTs and PTAs buy is a compact privilege: permission to practice in one other member state, issued on top of an active license in your home state and bought through the PT Compact Commission.

Which states are in the PT Compact?

As of October 25, 2026 these 38 states issue privileges: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Maine, Michigan and Rhode Island have enacted the compact but are not issuing yet.

How much does a PT compact privilege cost?

Each privilege costs the Commission's $45 fee plus the state's own fee, if it charges one. For PTs the total runs from $45 to $309 per state as of October 25, 2026, and the renewal fee is the same as the initial fee.

Is a compact privilege the same as a license?

Not quite. The Commission calls a privilege the legal equivalent of a state-issued license in that state, but it is state-specific, it depends on your home-state license, and it expires on the same date as that home license.

Do I need a jurisprudence exam?

It depends on the state: 22 of the 38 issuing states require a jurisprudence exam or course and 16 do not. Some require it before you buy the privilege and some within a set time after; the table above lists each state's rule.
