Working With More Than One Travel Therapy Agency

Published October 2, 2026 · Updated October 2, 2026 · By Matt Michuda, PT, DPT — former travel physical therapist

Last verified: against IRS Publication 505, the IRS Form W-2 instructions, the IRS Form W-4 FAQ and the IRS's 401(k) contribution-limit pages.

Travelers commonly speak with recruiters at more than one agency before choosing a contract. The care point: agencies commonly ask for your permission before submitting you to a specific facility, and a facility that receives the same therapist from two agencies may decline the submission. If two agencies employ you in the same year, each furnishes its own W-2, and the IRS figures withholding and your 401(k) deferral limit across all your jobs and plans, not per employer.

Key facts

Talking to several agencies

Travelers commonly speak with recruiters at more than one agency before choosing a contract. That is industry practice rather than a rule: no regulator addresses it, and no public source counts it. Our guide to how staffing agencies work explains how an agency turns a facility's rate into your package, and our agency checklist and questions to ask an agency cover what to compare between offers.

One submission per job

Agencies commonly ask for your permission before submitting you to a specific facility, and a facility that receives the same therapist from two agencies may decline the submission. That is industry practice, not a rule, and no public source sets it out. The practical step: ask each recruiter to confirm with you before they submit you anywhere, and keep your own list of where you have been submitted and by whom.

Two employers in one year: W-2s and withholding

Each agency that employs you during the year furnishes its own W-2. The IRS instruction to employers: “Generally, you must furnish Copies B, C, and 2 of Form W-2 to your employees by February 1, 2027.” (IRS, Form W-2 instructions)

Withholding is where two employers can catch you out. If the jobs overlap, Form W-4 Step 2 applies. IRS Publication 505: “Complete this step if you (1) hold more than one job at a time or (2) are married and plan to file a joint return and your spouse also works.” It adds: “You are more likely to need to increase your withholding if you have more than one job or if you are married filing jointly and your spouse also works.” (IRS Publication 505)

Why: “Tax rates increase as income rises, and only one standard deduction can be claimed on each tax return, regardless of the number of jobs.” (IRS, Form W-4 FAQ) How a package splits into wages and stipends, which is what withholding applies to, is in our guide to travel therapy pay packages.

One 401(k) limit across every plan

The deferral limit is yours, not each plan's. In the IRS's words: “The amount of salary deferrals you can contribute to retirement plans is your individual limit each calendar year no matter how many plans you're in.” (IRS, more than one plan) And: “Generally, you aggregate all elective deferrals you made to all plans in which you participate to determine if you have exceeded these limits.”

For 2026, the IRS puts the limit on employee elective deferrals to traditional and safe harbor 401(k) plans at “$24,500 in 2026, subject to cost-of-living adjustments”. (IRS, 401(k) limits) If you contribute at two agencies in one year, add the two together against that one limit.

Benefits and credentialing when you switch

Each agency runs its own benefit plans and its own credentialing. No source we read says how health-plan or 401(k) eligibility carries over when you change agencies, or whether one agency's credentialing file can be reused by another, so this page states no rule for either. Ask each agency; our guide to travel PT benefits lists what to ask.
